The Northern Neck's Encourager-in-Chief

If you've lived in the Northern Neck for very long, there's a good chance you've received an Orrie Christopher note.

Maybe it was tucked into your hand at a coffee shop. Maybe you found it on a counter. Maybe it appeared on your Facebook timeline at just the right moment. Written in his unmistakable handwriting, Orrie's notes are filled with Scripture, encouragement, and reminders of God's love.

For Orrie, now 27, sharing those messages isn't a hobby. It's a calling.

"God created all of us to have a true calling," he said. "And He created us to stay true to it no matter what."

Born and raised in Warsaw, Orrie has spent his entire life in the Northern Neck. He still remembers crying on his first day of kindergarten at Richmond County Elementary School, only to discover that school wasn't so scary after all thanks to kind classmates and caring teachers.

But some of his most important lessons came from home.

"My parents taught me that God created us to love everybody," Orrie said. "We're all different, but we still matter to God no matter what."

That belief has become the foundation of how he lives.

The inspiration for his handwritten notes began years ago at his Nanny’s house, when he discovered a devotional book by pastor Joel Osteen. His Nanny, Norma Pierce, had a copy of Your Best Life Begins Each Morning, and when Orrie picked it up, something changed.

"When I got that book, everything completely changed for me," Orrie said.

Since then, he has written thousands of notes, handing them out to strangers, friends, restaurant customers, nursing home residents, and anyone else he meets along the way.

"You never know what someone is going through," he said. "Everybody needs God."

Several years ago, Orrie had the opportunity to meet Osteen at a book signing in Maryland. More than 600 people attended, but Orrie was near the front of the line.

When he finally reached his hero, he told Osteen about the notes he writes and how he dreams of becoming a preacher.

The response has stayed with him ever since.

"Joel Osteen looked at me and said, 'Well, it seems to me, Orrie, you already are a preacher.'"

Orrie has never forgotten those words.

In fact, they helped shape the way he views ministry.

"You don't have to be behind a pulpit to make a difference," he said. "God created all of us with a purpose and to have a true calling.”

That simple philosophy has made an impact on countless lives throughout the region.

Today, Orrie works at Eggspresso on Fridays and Java Jack's on Saturdays, where he buses tables, takes out trash, and does something just as important in his eyes: distributes notes.

Lots of notes.

Sometimes dozens at a time.

His employers have encouraged him to continue sharing them, and customers often leave carrying more than just coffee.

They leave carrying encouragement.

When people tell Orrie that one of his notes arrived at exactly the right time, he doesn't take credit.

Instead, he simply keeps writing.

"I want to continue to be the hugest inspiration about God that the Northern Neck has ever known," he said.

Orrie's interests stretch far beyond his note-writing ministry. He is a devoted Elvis Presley fan, performs Elvis tribute shows at Northern Neck Senior Care, loves Secretariat, enjoys horse racing, and has taught himself to juggle balls, rings, and clubs—even while balancing on a Rolla Bolla.

He can tell you obscure facts about Elvis concerts, Secretariat's racing career, and circus history with remarkable enthusiasm.

Yet no matter where the conversation begins, it usually circles back to people.

That's where Orrie's heart is.

He donates monthly to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, enjoys encouraging friends on social media, and finds joy in making a difference in the lives of others.

"God created all of us in His own image," he said. "He created all of us to make a difference in this world"

Perhaps that's why so many people smile when Orrie's name comes up.

In a world that often feels hurried, cynical, and divided, Orrie Christopher continues doing something beautifully simple.

One handwritten note at a time, Orrie continues reminding the Northern Neck of a truth he believes with all his heart:

“You are God's masterpiece.”
